Northern lights
Enjoy the magic of the aurora borealis from the comfort of your cabin – Giellajohka is located in one of the best places in the world to experience the Northern Lights.
What Are the Northern Lights?
The Northern Lights, or aurora borealis, are a stunning natural phenomenon caused by solar particles colliding with Earth’s atmosphere. These collisions create vivid waves of color that light up the night sky – most commonly green, but also shades of red, yellow, violet, and blue. They are most visible in the far north during the darker months, when the quiet of the Arctic landscape is illuminated by nature’s own light show.
Experience the Northern Lights
Giellajohka is located far from light pollution, in one of the most aurora-active regions on Earth. That’s why many Northern Lights tours choose our area – and why so many of our guests get to see the auroras right from their doorstep.
You can enjoy the view from your cozy cabin or sit around one of our freely available outdoor fire pits while watching the sky come alive.
You can join our Aurora alert WhatsApp group and get predictions of upcoming auroras. We usually know 2 hours in advance when the light show will start. In the group you can also share and admire amazing shots of the night sky.
When to See the Northern Lights
The best chances to witness the Northern Lights are from September to April, when the skies are dark and clear. Giellajohka’s remote location and minimal light pollution make it an ideal spot for aurora watching – sometimes even from your bed or by the fireplace.
