OVER 60 YEARS OF HOSPITALITY

The Giellajohka property is one of the oldest accommodation sites in the area. Its story began in the 1960s, when the first owners opened a small café here to serve local road workers. Over the decades, the café evolved into a cozy holiday destination and a true Lapland oasis that attracts visitors from near and far.

During World War II, a German military camp was located in the Giellajohka area. In the surrounding forests, you can still find traces and artifacts from that time — reminders of both historical interest and its tragic legacy.

Today, Giellajohka is maintained by a small family business run by Anita and her children Jouni and Anni. We have been operating in Giellajohka since 2016. Our goal is to develop Giellajohka into the best possible resting place in the heart of Lapland’s wilderness — for every traveler passing by

HISTORY OF THE AREA

The Giellajohka area has a long and fascinating history. The first signs of human settlement have been found along the upper course of the Kielajoki River, only about a kilometer from the current holiday village. Stone Age tools and hearth remains have been discovered in the area. As early as 500 years before the Common Era, travelers recognized the Kielajoki River as an ideal place for rest and settlement along the fish-rich river. Over the centuries, the area also became an important home for many Sámi families.

During World War II, German soldiers built a road from Kaamanen to Norway. Prisoners of war and forcibly displaced people were used as labor to construct this road. Although the road is linked to tragic events, it made the area more accessible and opened up possibilities for tourism development.

After the war, the rich fishing waters of the Kielajoki River attracted numerous hikers and anglers. Metsähallitus (the Finnish Forest Administration) designated the area as an official camping site, and so the holiday village Kiellatupa was born. Kiellatupa and later Giellajohka have had several owners since the 1950s. Each owner has contributed to the development of the place in their own unique way, and the current owners continue this tradition with love and passion.
